Biking Extension

I obsess with biking. I’ve joined a school extension call biking. Why biking? It provides many benefits such as increasing strength and endurance, as well as decreasing body fat. Cycling mainly uses the legs but also incorporates upper-body muscles such as the chest, back, biceps, triceps, and shoulders for stabilization and performing maneuvers. Cycling does have an advantage over walking in terms of calorie burn. You need to burn calories to help you create a calorie deficit to lose weight. In one hour of leisurely cycling, at a pace slower than 10 mph, a 155-pound person burns 281 calories.

Journeys Of Change

Journeys of Change is a bike tour experience that will share insights into the lives of everyday Cambodians by creating a tour for visitors and locals, of the Phnom Penh area. The tour will focus on explaining the changes that have occurred and are occurring in this country, while simultaneously supporting local businesses, being environmentally conscious,  training tour guides in responsible tourism, providing cross-cultural exchanges, and creating job opportunities for Liger students to help further and fund their education, after high school.

TEDx Planning Commitee

“‘Creating a Hopeful Future’ – What does it mean? This year’s theme focusses on looking at the ideas and actions which we must embark on in order to create a better, more positive future to live in. Are you happy with the world that surrounds you today? What can we do to create a positive change? This is the opportunity to look at the world as it currently is – and begin our journey, bringing others along the way, to improve it so that all of society can benefit.” I love being apart of the TEDx planning committee and working with the ISPP students for this past three years. As an organizer, I have had a lot of experiences such as social advertiser (manage facebook posts etc..), mic sets up, stage design, choosing speakers and helping in modifying the speakers’ speeches.  I’m very satisfied with working in events because I’ll get meet a lot of people who share a passion for what they do. It’s one of my dream and what many people dream of doing too. Sure enough, working in events is not always a fun thing, there are dull tasks, too, and it is stressful. But what I found out is that planning is one of the most significant project management and time management techniques. Planning teaches me how to prepare a sequence of action steps to achieve some specific goal. I’ve learned that if you do it effectively, you can reduce much the necessary time and effort of achieving the goal. A plan is like a map.

Floor Hockey

Floor hockey refers to a collection of indoor hockey sports. All types of floor hockey are played on wooden surfaces or basketball court. Different variations of skates and sticks, and a ball or we can be called it a puck is all used in different ways. The main goals of this sport are moving the ball or puck towards the opponent’s goal and score many goals as possible with the match duration. There are some basic rules that are commonly used for all types of game such as, overtime play and penalty shootouts are used to decide a winner if the game is tied at the end of regulation time, the hockey stick was only allowed to raise it up to our knee. If you are against the rule, you’ll get to wait out for two or three minutes.

Hip Hop – Homi

Breakdancing is also called breaking or b-boy, is an athletic style of street dance. This typically set to hip-hop, funky, and breakbeat music.

Hip-hop is a popular dance that is usually performed to hip-hop music and involvement from hip-hop culture. Hip Hop Dance is a style of dance with deeply rooted historical, social, cultural contexts that trace back to the African and Afro-Caribbean diaspora.

Yoga

Yoga has many methods which use specifically on meditation techniques. This focuses the mind on your breathing. practice on breathing can help you to boost oxygen level to your brain. This also increases your flexibility. By practicing yoga, you can maintain a healthy weight and you’ll become more flexible, increase your strength, and your muscle tone.

3D – Design

Have you ever wondered how man-made things in our physical world have been created? Ever look at a building, bridge, computer, or motorbike and wonder how it all came together so perfectly? Have you ever thought about how things were designed in order to fulfill a certain requirement? Chances are they were created with the help of Computer Aided Design or CAD.  CAD is used in many industries including all types of engineering like Aerospace, Automotive, and Medical.  It is used to make magnificent architectural designs that decorate our cities.  CAD is also used for animation and special effects.

The reason CAD is used in all these industries is that using a computer to design increases the accuracy of the expression of the designer since the computer can calculate geometries at a very fast rate.

Before CAD was invented, designs were made by creating drawings and many iterations of prototypes with different materials before a design could be approved.  Now with the help of CAD we can approve a design and rapid prototype (3D print) very quickly cutting design time significantly.  Now with 3D printing becoming more popular, anyone can design on a computer and create objects in real life!

On behalf of the students of the Liger Learning center, we hope to inspire you to start playing in the world of 3D with our 3D design curriculum!

STEAM/PBL

STEAM/PBL

What is PBL?

  • Project-based learning (PBL) Key Points:
  • educational method (not just a teaching or learning style)
  • actively explore
  • real-world problems, challenges
  • deeper knowledge, skills, experiences
  • outside of the classroom
  • learning by doing (experiential)
  • realistic products, solutions or outcomes

Definition

Project-based learning is an educational method that involves inspiring students in problem-solving and investigative activities to gain deeper knowledge, skills, and experiences; giving students the opportunity to actively explore challenging questions and real-world problems outside of the classroom resulting in realistic products, solutions or other outcomes.

Changing Cambodia III

Time flies fast, new experiences, new people…. Right now I’m currently studying in high school. High school life is difficult. During this 2016-2017 I guessed I have change Cambodian more than last year. I learned new thing and experience new things such as working with people in the community. Sharing my knowledge with the community and children are very fun.

What is an amazing experience? Working with all my creative, genius and friendly members of Preventative Health Exploration. This was a totally new experience for me. I think this exploration was so different from the other ones I’ve been in because this exploration was when I could show my knowledge in class, and at the same time, I could try a lot of new things such as snorkeling and scuba diving. In addition, I enjoyed teaching the students about preventative health. At that time, I could see a big difference of presenting to the Juniors and to the students at the community on Koh Rong island. Also, learning about health is very helpful and I like doing it. I really enjoy sharing my knowledge with other young Cambodian students that don’t have the opportunity to us. Working and playing with those kids brought me joy. I respectfully believe that they will pass out the information and knowledge that my team members taught to others, especially their family and neighborhood. It wasn’t just about having fun but also I got to talk with them about the problems they currently face in their daily life and helped shared ideas in order to bring solutions to them.

One of the best experiences in this exploration was exploring coral reefs, seagrass, many biodiversity and other ecosystems. Marine life is one of the major ecosystems on earth and I think everyone deserved to understand about it more. Understanding marine biodiversity is very important for a number of reasons. The importance of marine biodiversity falls into a few categories such as Adaptation, food, habitat, and climate. Adaptation is biodiversity allows the environment to adapt to changing conditions, as has been the case since life was created. Food is a very important commodity that can be provided by our oceans including fishes, invertebrates, and algae. Very few of the world’s fish are utilized commercially and thus, the oceans are a source for unutilized resources. The marine environment supplies many kinds of habitats that support marine life. Marine life depends in some way on the saltwater that is in the sea. A habitat is an ecological or environmental area inhabited by one or more living species.

My third rounds exploration was Game Design. Game design is an exploration that invented the Climate Change board game. The ideas of this board game are to help students in Cambodia to understand more about climate by learning the impact of climate change and implement solutions to it. In the game, we will move to the future which is the year 2500 and the world are faced with a huge problem. That problem is climate change. Climate change causes natural disaster such as tsunamis, droughts, and floods that will cause sickness to a lot of people on in the world, face with starvation and homelessness. You and your other three friends will have to travel back to in time to change history and save our future. You have to study hard, value your education, and build solutions in each province in Cambodia to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, rescue our country and the world from natural disaster caused by climate change. Not just focusing on building the game our exploration also learning in-depth into climate change that our world currently faces. I loved working with the government school students by teaching them about the game and sharing information about climate change also. As what my teammates and I observed while working with the students, none of them knew anything about climate change. So, by playing through this game it helps them to understand deeply about it. I love seeing the students are having fun while playing the game. Even though I can’t share my knowledge to all the government school students but I’m proud of making a small change in Cambodia.

Waste Management 3

Project Summary

The exploration module follows the waste explorations of the previous two rounds, where the students have already determined the lines of business and started to experiment with the concepts relating to these businesses. The focus of the exploration to develop the compost creating the side of the business. We will not only continue our experiments with composting but will also see how possible it is to get community buy-in, by attempting a small-scale operation of the business with households in Phum Champous-Kaek, particularly asking households and businesses to separate their organic waste for us. The final goal of the exploration will be to further refine a previously-started business plan that can be used as a solution for areas of Cambodia that have a lack of sufficient garbage collection.

Project Outcome

What will students be able to do/write/create/build?

  • Create an effective and more complete business plan

  • Learn the various purposes of a business plan

  • Plan and conduct community outreach

  • Conduct experiments with compost that can be used to vet business concepts

  • Develop business plans and objectives

  • Conduct experiments on compost yield
